BIKE – HIKE – KAYAK

BIKE – HIKE – KAYAK

Summer in Northeast Pennsylvania

One of the best reasons for living here (or visiting) is the pristine nature that surrounds us. Some people will whine that the grocery store is so far… or that there’s no Starbucks easily accessible. I say, enjoy the ride to the grocery store because you might very well see an eagle or a bear. And, have you enjoyed MOKA or Black and Brass for coffee?

The night sky showcases a million stars, meteor showers and glimmering planets. The air is so rich you can drink it from a cup. Aside from a handful of days, the temp isn’t suffocating. When it does heat up, there are lakes and rivers to cool you down.

Kayaking on a river or a serene lake will soothe your soul. There are lakes all around this area. The big daddy – Lake Wallenpaupack, Promised Land, Prompton State Park offer excellent kayak (or canoe) options. The Delaware River is a delight even when it’s low. If you have your own kayak and put it after 2pm, you pretty much have the river to yourself. It never ceases to amaze me how this river contributed to the building of New York City and Philadelphia and yet still remains nearly the same as when George Washington would have visited. If you have the opportunity to kayak the Lackawaxen River – I highly recommend it – especially after a dam release!

There is no shortage of hiking. Prompton has great trails. Shuman’s Point along Lake Wallenpaupack is a lovely hike. Bring your lunch and enjoy a waterfront picnic. The Tusten Mountain trail in Sullivan County is a challenging hike. I get lost every time!

Biking is available for every level. Prompton offers some great mountain biking. My favorite bike ride is along the Lackawaxen River’s Towpath. I can sometimes hear the clatter of the boats from days gone by. And, I nearly always see an eagle!

Although the area is very user friendly (just be careful you are not crossing private property – easy way to get shot) another option is to check out Northeast Wilderness Experience (NEWE) in Honesdale. They offer an abundance of adventure opportuities.

However you chose to explore the area – just make sure to get outside and appreciate the magnificent beauty waiting to embrace you.
