TWO RIVERS MARATHON

TWO RIVERS MARATHON

Running Wild in Lackawaxen

A few years ago, the folks who run the Two Rivers Marathon reached out to the Lackawaxen community inviting residents to participate. It began with Saturday morning 5k’s for training. I was surprised to find nearly thirty people gathered for the first meeting. We stretched. We laughed. We connected as a community. We met some new neighbors along with some old ones. Runners ran. Walkers walked briskly. Whatever your comfort level, you had company.

The event is notable as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. I never knew that people ran back to back marathons in a weekend. I didn’t even know that was humanly possible. Not only is it possible but there’s a global network of crazy folks who travel the world to indulge.

It’s also a special weekend as it offers full and half marathons as well as 5k and 10k options, making it an ideal event to grow your ability. And, all of this happens against the backdrop of the beautiful Lackawaxen River.

Local residents may experience slight inconvenience for the weekend but efforts have been made over the years to bridge concerns. There are some crazy runners in the zone which sometimes happens to be in the middle of the road. There are some crazy drivers that don’t understand the need to slow down for people on the road. But those are the exceptions. Overall, the weekend brings a lot of business to the area. And a lot of fun for all!

But the best part for residents, especially those who participate, is the community that you are now connected to. After the first year, we were sad to see it end. We decided to continue to meet every first Saturday of the month at 10a in Veterans Park throughout the year. Beginning in January, we meet every Saturday. And, on those really cold mornings, it is so rewarding to get outside, move your body and laugh with new friends. It is such a great way to start your day!

This year, its 10th year, The Two Rivers Marathon will take place on March 29th and March 30th.  For additional information or to register visit www.tworiversmarathon.com. They give great swag along with a fun, healthy, family-friendly event.
