One of the Poconos’ best-kept secrets doesn’t open until after sunset. There’s no admission fee, no reservations, and no long lines. All you need is a blanket, a comfortable chair, and a little patience.
Welcome to the greatest light show in the Pocono Mountains.
While city lights wash away all but the brightest stars, many areas throughout the Poconos still offer wonderfully dark skies. On a clear August night, you can spot thousands of stars, satellites quietly gliding overhead, and, if you’re lucky, the hazy ribbon of the Milky Way stretching across the sky.
Then there are the Perseids.
Every August, Earth passes through a trail of dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As those tiny bits of space debris enter our atmosphere, they burn up in brilliant streaks of light. We call them shooting stars, but they’re really tiny cosmic visitors putting on a show. During the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, August 12–13, 2026, is your invitation to look up. Patient skywatchers can sometimes spot dozens of meteors each hour.
Not bad for free entertainment.
To make the most of the experience, head away from bright lights. Give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness, skip the flashlight if you can, and resist the urge to check your phone every few minutes. (The stars appreciate your undivided attention.)
Bring bug spray. Bring a sweatshirt. Bring hot chocolate if the evening turns cool. And don’t be surprised if the conversation fades. There’s something about looking at a sky full of stars that naturally quiets a crowd.
Kids love counting shooting stars. Adults tend to remember the last time they slowed down long enough to notice them.
Whether you’re stretched out on a dock at Lake Wallenpaupack, relaxing in a campground, or sitting in your own backyard, August reminds us that some of the most memorable experiences don’t require tickets, schedules, or Wi-Fi.
Just look up.
